The Board of Directors of the Bicuspid Aortic Foundation has established a
Distinguished Scientist Award and designated that it be given annually in recognition
of significant contributions to the advancement of thoracic aortic surgery.
The Foundation's first Distinguished Scientist Award was presented
to Professor Randall B. Griepp, MD, at a dinner in his honor on April 10, 2005
in San Francisco.
Dr. Griepp's numerous pioneering contributions
to the surgical treatment of aortic aneurysm and dissection in the chest have
greatly advanced the ability to address even the most difficult aspects of these
conditions. In addition to providing aortic surgical training to many residents
through the years, Dr. Griepp has been the program director of the Aortic Surgery
Symposium. Since its inception this Symposium has been invaluable, providing
an international forum focused solely on the treatment of the thoracic aorta.
For patients and families affected by aortic aneurysm, dissection,
heart valve conditions, and other aspects of the underlying associated conditions,
it is both reassuring and comforting to know that the pioneers in the treatment
of aortic disease in the chest continue to press forward with leading
edge approaches.
The picture below includes a patient, a family member,
and four internationally recognized surgeons specializing in the treatment
of aortic aneurysm and dissection in the chest. This picture embodies the
essence of what the Bicuspid Aortic Foundation is: patients, families, and medical
professionals who together create an atmosphere of caring and a climate of
hope.
Among those present at the dinner in Dr. Griepp's honor were (left to right)
Mrs. Arlys Velebir, Mrs. Carrie Mettler, Dr. Teruhisa Kazui (Hamamatsu, Japan),
Dr. Randall Griepp,
Dr. Nicholas Kouchoukos (St. Louis), Dr. Eva Griepp,
Mrs. Judy Kouchoukos, Dr. Sharo Raissi
The Foundation would like to thank Dr. Ed Yee and his wife Vicki for their interest
in the Foundation's mission, their kindness in assisting with the arrangements
in San Francisco, and joining us in honoring Dr. Griepp.
