In 2005 I received an email from Stacey Grieshop. She was searching for information
about the condition that had suddenly taken her husband's life. That same year
in September, she and the Grieshop family held their first community event,
seeking to raise awareness and help others. September 2008 marks the fourth year
that this family has hosted an event in their community focused on BAVD and TAAD. Recently an email came to the Foundation from a family in Ohio. They had received an announcement about the September 2008 Doug Grieshop Memorial Benefit. Their child has been diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve disease. Thanks to Stacey Grieshop and her unwavering dedication to telling others about BAVD and TAAD, this family now has access to vital information that they very much need. Many miles from Ohio in Hawaii, Suzie Henyan and Seven-Eleven Hawaii also raised awareness of BAVD and TAAD this September. Seven-Eleven Hawaii selected the Bicuspid Aortic Foundation for their September canister drive. Yes, in those beautiful islands, BAVD and TAAD are affecting individuals and families too, as they are through out the world. No matter where we live, TAAD is all around us. We have not yet reached the level of awareness required to keep individuals and families safe from sudden injury or death. We are very grateful to the Grieshop family, Suzie Henyan and Seven-Eleven Hawaii, and each one who supported their efforts to raise awareness and provide financial support for our mission - creating hope for TAAD families everyone. Sometimes someone asks what they can do to help. One place to begin is right in our own communities. BAVD and other forms of familial TAAD are all around us. You may be surprised who you might help, just by sharing information about TAAD. I have been! You may not have been able to host an event in your community this September. But by simply reaching out to others, you may give them something very important, very precious - information that may save their life. On September 13, 2008, Stacey Grieshop and the Grieshop family hosted a benefit in
memory of Douglas Grieshop, who lost his life suddenly due to aortic dissection associated with BAVD on September
20, 2004. Pictured at left with Stacey are Olivia and Grant. Grant was 17 months and Olivia
was not yet born at the time of Doug's death. Here is a video from the benefit. |
